Can we have a prosperous economic system with personal liberties without a strong moral foundation? I think not. A free market system, even one that is regulated, cannot prosper without a moral foundation. Austrian economists favor minimal government, but a free enterprise system will falter unless it is supported by well meaning, law abiding citizens. When the moral fabric of a country is torn by civil strive, when society falls away from its moral compass, when private gain supersedes the social good, order can only be accomplished with the strong arm of a powerful, intrusive federal government. But, when this happens personal freedom and economic prosperity will disappear.
